From Greece to Thailand. Hear from our guy Peter as he travels the world volunteering in hostels.

Volunteering at Matala Hostel in Crete was an unforgettable experience. What made it memorable were the people I met. It puts a smile on my face thinking back! Every night was a pool party. There was always music playing, drinks flowing, and everyone was happy. It was the ideal way to cap off a day volunteering. I met so many people from all over the world. I made friends from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK. Most nights we’d chill with drinks and chat shit, share travel stories and play games.

Getting involved in the local community was another highlight of mine. I had the opportunity to participate in local events and festivals, which increased my appreciation for Matala’s culture. I learned how to make traditional Greek dishes such as moussaka and tzatziki by taking a cooking class. I also had the opportunity to visit Santorini, which was one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen.

The hostel itself was everything I needed it to be! It was a relief when I saw the place myself as it was my main concern before going. The rooms were large and comfortable, with enough space for everyone. Each room had its own balcony with beautiful views of the countryside.

The work wasn’t difficult. I mostly assisted with cleaning and tidying up the common areas and hanging out with travellers. Occasionally I would help on reception and at the bar but it was actually super fun helping keep the hostel running.

My time at Matala Hostel left a big impression on me and has given me the courage to travel alone and seek out new experiences.
